Castle Dargan Golf Notes 30th August 2010

It was another busy weekend on the course at Castle Dargan with both club competitions very well supported. Saturday’s single stableford event which was sponsored by EGS was keenly contested with Richard Graham (19) holding off a late challenge from Mark Boyd (8) to win with 38 pts after a count back. Alex O Connell (7) was third and got his first podium finish of the season. On Sunday the Noel Mc Tiernan sponsored event was won by a delighted Dean Fullam (24) with an excellent score of 45 pts. Vice captain John Gethins (25) was second with 44pts while Declan Gilmartin (19) was third on 41 pts beating Eugene Carroll after a count back. Kevin Conlon who finished his round with an excellent birdie on the 18th just failed to make it into the top three. The junior winner on Sunday was Donal Carroll (19) while Mark Kelly won Saturdays juniors prize.
The junior challenge trophy was contested on Sunday morning between last year’s finalists Mark Kelly and Mark Templeton White. Both players felt the pressure at the start however it was Mark Kelly who quickly settled to the task and opened up a two hole lead that he never let go. The match finished on the 16th green with Mark getting revenge for last years defeat. In the third and forth place play off it was Mark’s sister Meave Kelly who won out on the 17th against Kevin Broadrick. Congratulations to Paul Little again for organising the competition and to all who took part.
With the club intending to hold the Castle Dargan Council Cup, the Castle Dargan Cup the Darren Clarke Cup and the Foley and Cawley Cup finals on Sunday 26th September it is vital that all semi finals are played by this Sunday. There are a number of players involved in more than one competition and those players are asked to ensure that they make the necessary arrangements to have their both their semi final matches completed by Sunday 19th Sep. There is a hollowcoreing programme planned for Monday 27th September and the club would like to ensure that all competitions are completed before this vital maintenance work begins. Please check the competitions sheet for updated fixtures.
The club outing has been confirmed for October 16th and 17th with Ballyconneely and Westport the two courses to be played with an overnight in the Station House Hotel in Clifden. The total cost of the trip is €150 and a deposit of €50 is required to secure your place on the trip. These deposits are being collected by vice captain John Gethins. More information is posted in the golf shop.
Castle Dargan golf club is holding a fundraising Golf Classic on Saturday 25th September. The competition will be a scramble and a team of four will cost €120 and it is intended to hold the presentation of prizes later that evening. If possible we would appreciate if two members could invite two guests to form a team. There is a time sheet posted and tees can be booked by contacting the golf shop
